2) Most impactful Texas football injuries post-Week 1: Tyler Johnson

I’m putting an asterisk on this part of the list because it’s unknown what could be keeping Johnson from suiting up in full for the Longhorns.

Really there could be a focus along the entirety of the offensive line for the Longhorns early in the 2020 season. Texas had a good portion of their underclassmen offensive linemen out for the season opener. And that does hurt since that was the best chance for Herman and offensive line coach Herb Hand to get all of these young guys early playing time.

Maybe the most intriguing name to watch for the Longhorns among the young offensive linemen that hasn’t won a starting spot as of yet is the former five-star recruit and redshirt freshman offensive tackle/guard Tyler Johnson. Among the other injured offensive linemen that included Jaylen Garth and Isaiah Hookfin.

Johnson did get his fifth star retracted before the end of the 2019 recruiting cycle. But he was still one of the more highly touted recruits of the 2019 signing class for the Longhorns. He ranked as the nation’s No. 58 2019 high school prospect, No. 8 offensive tackle, and No. 9 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).

Now a Horns247 report did show that Johnson arrived back to campus out of shape this offseason, which could be the reason why he didn’t play in Week 1. If that is the case, it obviously isn’t an injury concern. But it was still a no show that could be impactful over the long haul compared to the early impact that Johnson was expected to make for Texas.
