2) Positions of need in 2021 Texas football recruiting class: DT

While it didn’t look as if the Longhorns were going to be thin in the middle of the defensive line this year, at the outset of the 2020 offseason, the NCAA Transfer Portal swallowed up a lot of the depth at the defensive tackle position. Texas lost both senior defensive tackles Gerald Wilbon and D’Andre Christmas-Giles to the transfer portal earlier in the year.

While both Wilbon and Christmas-Giles were about to run out of eligibility anyway, adding depth at the position has become more notable than ever.

Beyond what Texas has with redshirt sophomore defensive tackle and former four-star recruit Keondre Coburn, they would have to do some shuffling of the depth chart along the front seven. True freshman and former three-star recruit Sawyer Goram-Welch and sophomore T’Vondre Sweat could be two names to watch.

The new defensive scheme run under defensive coordinator Chris Ash is one that has a nose tackle to anchor the line and then a true defensive tackle lining up alongside him. Texas can get more creative with how they priotize their targets at the position now.

One name to watch for the remainder of this cycle at the defensive/nose tackle position is four-star La Porte product and Texas native Albert Regis. It looks like the Longhorns are set to be locked in a recruiting battle to land a commitment from the underrated Regis with head coach PJ Fleck and the Minnesota Golden Gophers out of the Big Ten.
