How former Texas football transfers fared in Week 3

Shane Buechele, SMU QB

The SMU Mustangs really got off and running against a decent Group of Five opponent over the weekend, as they hit the road for the short drive up to Denton to face the North Texas Mean Green out of Conference-USA. North Texas was never able to make this much of a game really, as multiple former Longhorn transfers contributed to the 65-35 SMU convincing win.

Redshirt senior quarterback Shane Buechele had a really big day for the SMU offense, completed more than 70 percent of his passing attempts for just shy of 350 passing yards, five total touchdowns, and no interceptions. It was a near flawless day for Buechele, who is now one of the passing yard and touchdown leaders in the nation coming out of Week 3.

Chris Naggar, SMU K

The story of what former Texas kicker and SMU senior Chris Naggar has done since hitting the transfer portal during the 2019 offseason deserves more notoriety. Naggar was very good for the Mustangs special teams unit at the outset of the 2020 regular season. He is perfect on four field goal attempts this season, and perfect on 12 extra-point attempts as well.

In the win over North Texas, Naggar was a perfect 3-for-3 on field goal attempts. That included one make from 46 yards, and another one from 37. It’s not like the Mustangs needed Naggar to do this to beat the Mean Green, but it’s nice to have that reliability coming from the kicking game.

JP Urquidez, Texas State OT

There has yet to be a single snap that the former Texas offensive tackle and senior Texas State Bobcat JP Urquidez has played in thus far since landing in San Marcos last offseason. Texas State did claim their first win of the 2020 regular season, though, in a triumph over Louisiana-Monroe.

Gerald Wilbon, Louisiana Tech DT

Another former Longhorns senior transfer that was expected to make an impact right away with a Group of Five team this fall was defensive tackle Gerald Wilbon. Landing with the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs out of the transfer portal last offseason, Wilbon made his season debut over the weekend in a win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles.

Wilbon registered two solo tackles (and two total tackles) in that big win for Louisiana Tech to open up their 2020 season over Southern Miss.
