1) Texas football players who could breakout vs. Tech: Caden Sterns

One of the absolute most important, and talented, defensive backs that must standout for the Longhorns heading into the start of the Big 12 slate is the former highly coveted five-star Cibolo recruit and junior safety Caden Sterns. Facing a usually potent Texas Tech passing game, and a proven signal caller like Bowman, makes for an important Big 12 opener for Sterns.

The run for Sterns just hasn’t been the same in pass coverage since the beginning of his true freshman campaign. It looked like Sterns was on pace to be the best safety and NFL Draft prospect to land on the Forty Acres since Earl Thomas (currently a free agent in the NFL), but that momentum has waned since.

The good news for this defensive backfield is that Sterns started to become a more well-rounded safety last season. He did register more total tackles and tackles for loss last season than he did during his freshman campaign. And he continued that momentum in the season opener, with four total tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, and one pass deflection.

Sterns now brings with him 125 career total tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, 2.0 sacks, four interceptions, and six pass deflections, in 23 games played over the course of three seasons into this matchup against the Red Raiders. Look for him to make a big impact alongside junior cornerback D’shawn Jamison and senior Chris Brown this weekend.
