2) Takeaways from Texas football’s win over Texas Tech: Special teams was chaos

Something that both saved the Longhorns in this game, and nearly cost them dearly, was the special teams unit. About the only steady player on the special teams unit for the Longhorns this weekend was Dicker. He was a perfect 7-for-7 on extra-point attempts, and knocked through both of his field goal attempts (with a long from 43 yards).

Dicker also got the Longhorns to recover that wild onside kick bounce in the dying minutes of the fourth quarter. And while Dicker provided a lot of positives and exciting moments in this game for the Longhorns, the special teams also delivered a lot of negative takeaways.

Texas was bailed out twice on special teams mistakes on interceptions tossed soon after by redshirt sophomore Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman. But a muffed punt from junior corner and versatile threat D’shawn Jamison cost the Longhorns seven points in the second half. Texas also had a punt that was blocked and taken back for a touchdown.

But the special teams mistakes didn’t cost just the Longhorns at different points of this game. Texas also blocked a punt from Texas Tech and returned it for a touchdown.

It’s rare that special teams can impact a game in such a way that they did in this crazy comeback win for the Longhorns over the Red Raiders. Sometimes that’s just how it plays out, and Herman should be happy with how everything panned out in the end.
