Baker Mayfield sends vivid message to Texas football fans
One of the biggest haters of the Texas football program, former OU quarterback Baker Mayfield, had a message for the Longhorns ahead of Red River.
It is that week where every Texas football fans hopes that a triumph over their biggest conference foe lies ahead on Saturday afternoon. It’s the week of the annual Red River Rivalry game between Texas and the Oklahoma Sooners, and this one feels about as different as it possibly can. Texas and Oklahoma come into this year’s version of Red River with a combined record of 3-3 (1-3 Big 12). The only win in Big 12 play for either of these two teams came for Texas back on Sep. 26 in their conference opener on the road in Lubbock in a thrilling 63-56 overtime triumph over the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
Now, the Longhorns will have to upend what will very likely be a very motivated Oklahoma team led by head coach Lincoln Riley. Oklahoma is not used to coming into Red River with these stakes on the line. They are very much on the brink of elimination from contention to make the College Football Playoff, depending on how the Big Ten and PAC-12 seasons play out. And we’re just three games into their part of the 2020 regular season.
Meanwhile, Texas doesn’t come into Red River with much momentum either this year. Texas is fresh off a tough loss at the hands of the TCU Horned Frogs, by the crushing final score of 33-31, in their Big 12 home opener. The win was Texas’ for the taking, but the game was fumbled away at the goal line with less than three minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.
The point here is that both Texas and Oklahoma desperately need a win. And each team is going to play with that level of desperation this weekend. That will make it even more difficult for Texas to bounce back after falling short against TCU last weekend.
The Mayfield message for Texas football
To give Oklahoma a boost, a notorious Longhorn hater and Austin, TX, native Baker Mayfield threw his message into the mix on social media on Oct. 6. He posted a video on his Instagram page earlier this week, giving his support for the Sooners and negative thoughts on Texas.
Mayfield apparently believes that while the Sooners are down right now, they are more than capable of taking care of business against the Longhorns on Oct. 10. The former Oklahoma quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Mayfield went 2-2 in his career against Texas. But one of those losses to the Longhorns came while Mayfield was a member of Texas Tech. He went 2-1 in Red River while playing for the Sooners.
His best outing against Texas came back in 2016, where he registered more than 400 total yards, four touchdowns, and two picks. That game resulted in a 31-22 win for the Sooners. But the worst game for Mayfield in Red River came in 2015, where he was held under 225 total yards, with just one total touchdown. That resulted in an upset win for former head coach Charlie Strong and the Longhorns.
Texas still owns the all-time edge in Red River against Oklahoma, with a record of 62-48-5. Oklahoma does own a two-game winning streak in this rivalry, though. They’ll be looking to extend that winning streak to three, while Texas will be looking to get back on track and get some heat off of head coach Tom Herman.
Texas and Oklahoma are still playing at the Cotton Bowl at the Texas State Fairgrounds in Dallas in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic. It will be in front of a limited crowd in Dallas, kicking off at 11 a.m. CT on Oct. 10.
