3) Why Texas football HC Tom Herman should be on hot seat: Failed coordinator hires

It looks like we might be going through another round of poor coordinator hires by Herman during his time as head coach on the Forty Acres. There was a time when it looked like now USC Trojans defensive coordinator (formerly with the Longhorns in the same role) Todd Orlando was going to be able to win himself a head coaching job.

Even former Texas offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tim Beck had a better start with the Longhorns than he finished up with. But Beck is having a good start under head coach Dave Doeren with the NC State Wolfpack this season. He’s leading one of the upstart offenses in the ACC, averaging well over 31 points per game.

We have yet to see what will happen with Orlando, but it will be interesting to see how he pans out under head coach Clay Helton with the USC football program.

This time around, Herman tried his hands with former Ohio State passing game coordinator Mike Yurcich as his next offensive coordinator, and former Rutgers head coach Chris Ash as his next defensive coordinator. There are times when it looks like Ash and Yurcich are going to work out, but not when it mattered over the course of the last two weeks.

Yurcich’s offense is presenting some of the same concerns that it did at times when he was the offensive coordinator under head coach Mike Gundy with the Oklahoma State Cowboys. The offense just looks out of rhythm and can’t get the right play calling or scheme when they can take control of the game against a good opponent.

Ash has his defense playing well at times, but they’re still allowing more than 36.0 points per game this season, good for bottom 12 in the FBS so far.
