2) Why Texas football HC Tom Herman should be on hot seat: Best players aren’t always playing their best

Texas isn’t really getting their best play out of their top players when it matters most this fall. Most programs would have a valid excuse for a lot of their most talented players showing out inconsistently this year, in the midst of the novel coronavirus pandemic. But this is the most talented and experienced Texas team that Herman has at his disposal since first arriving on the Forty Acres prior to the 2017 season.

Herman produced solid results were a good and experienced team during the 2018 campaign, but there were also a lot of close calls that could’ve decimated that season for the Longhorns. Other than that, Texas looks like they’re headed for another season with three or four losses at least in Big 12 play.

The total record that Herman registered during his four years as Texas head coach thus far is 27-17 (.614 winning percentage), and 3-0 in bowl games.

Texas is going to need their top players, such as senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger and junior safety Caden Sterns, to be at their best when it matters most. And not just that, they do need to be healthy for the Longhorns to be working at maximum efficiency. That’s not always within Herman’s control, but it will have a big say in the outcome of the Longhorns 2020 campaign.

Other key players for the Longhorns like Ingram, sophomore running back Roschon Johnson, sophomore wide receiver Jake Smith, senior defensive end Ta’Quon Graham, and junior cornerback D’shawn Jamison, among others, aren’t really playing all that well through four games. The fact that most of these players aren’t showing up at key times (especially during the last two weeks) is a poor reflection back on the coaching staff.
