1) Why Texas football HC Tom Herman should be on hot seat: Is the program going anywhere?

A huge frustration that Longhorns football fans have that is also a valid gripe with Herman’s squads are the lack of discipline and consistency in key games. This might be one of the most undisciplined Texas teams we’ve seen over the course of the last dozen years or so.

Texas is averaging around 10 penalties called against them per game, good for losing around 88.0 yards per game. They’re also starting to turn the ball over more, which is not a good sign. Texas came into the season doing a good job of managing turnovers. But they’re almost up to as many turnovers that they’ve coughed up per game that they have forced from their opponents.

In the loss to Oklahoma, Texas once again took costly penalties at the wrong times. Texas was penalized for more than 80.0 yards, some of which cost them in overtime.

The special teams is also a disaster this year. Multiple punts blocked that were returned for touchdowns, field goals blocked, and muffed punt returns, all don’t reflect well on Herman and his staff.

All in all, none of these points really provide for much excitement or confidence as to where this Texas program is headed from here under Herman’s direction. Texas got worse over the course of the last two years, and this team is putting to waste a lot of talent and experience that should be making some noise in the Big 12.

Things won’t get any easier for here for Herman and the Longhorns. Next up for them is a battle with the Baylor Bears coming out of the bye week (if their COVID-19 issues clear up) on Oct. 24 at home. And then they round out the month on the road at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater against Oklahoma State.
