Texas Basketball: 3 most unlikable OU hoops players since 2000
1) Unlikable Sooners for Texas basketball since 2000: Trae Young
Definitely the biggest name out of the Oklahoma hoops program in the last decade that is currently starring in the NBA is the former elite five-star recruit and Atlanta Hawks first-time All-Star point guard Trae Young. “Ice Trae” started his rise to the elite realm of point guards in college hoops, and then in the NBA, in his first and only year at Oklahoma.
Young was about as highly touted as they come for an in-state recruit for the Sooners on the hardwood. And he broke out right away for the Sooners, playing in 32 games during his one year in Norman. He averaged 27.4 points per game, 3.9 rebounds, 8.7 assists, 1.7 steals, and 0.3 blocks. And he shot 42.2 percent from the field, 36.0 percent from beyond the arc, and 86.1 percent from the free-throw line.
Texas did go 2-0 against Young’s Oklahoma team during the 2017-18 campaign. They did their best to keep his potent scoring ability at bay, keeping him under his points per game total for the season in each of the two Red River meetings.
Yet, Young still commanded the bulk of the attention of any Big 12 player during the 2017-18 season, nabbing AP All-American honors, the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year award, and he was a finalist for the Wooden and Naismith Awards.
It’s very easy to argue that the Young-led Sooners were the most overrated team in the Big 12 during the 2017-18 season. They were more qualified to be an NIT team that season, and still made it through to the expense of a few other Big 12 teams to the “Big Dance”. Although both Texas and Oklahoma were out of the NCAA Tournament pretty fast in 2018.
