2) Texas football players worst off under Herman: Tyler Owens

A former five-star defensive back recruit for the Longhorns that is brimming with potential, and just isn’t getting on the field at key times all that much, is sophomore safety/SPUR Tyler Owens. One of the most talented defensive backs further down the depth chart for Texas needs to get more playing time in key spots once he’s ready to go from the hamstring injury he’s currently dealing with.

A common theme among the Longhorns players on this list is the plethora of injury issues that each of them has dealt with over the course of the last two years, and that doesn’t reflect fully on Herman and his coaching staff. But it is a weird trend that Texas had so many problems staying healthy in each of the past three years.

In just one game played really this season for Owens, he registered one tackle and one pass deflection. In his two years playing for Texas in total, Owens racked up nine total tackles, only two missed tackles, one pass breakup, and two stops on third down. He’s also had some valuable contributions on special teams early in his college career.

Even though Owens is one of the highest graded Longhorns defensive players in coverage in the last two years combined, he only got more than two snaps in the win over UTEP in the season opener. He’s been targeted seven times in his first two seasons at Texas, with only three completions, no touchdown catches, and one pass breakup.

Get him a bigger role with other injuries piling up in the secondary once he’s ready to go from this hamstring injury.
