1) Texas football players worst off under Herman: B.J. Foster

Yet another immensely talented defensive back for the Longhorns that the coaching staff seemingly just can’t figure out what to do with is the former elite five-star safety recruit and junior B.J. Foster. Part of this is a product of Foster already having multiple safeties coaches/defensive coordinators since his time on the Forty Acres began, and another is just the staff not knowing how to best utilize his skill set.

Foster showed incredible pursuit and closing speed in pass coverage and stopping the ball carrier around the line of scrimmage in the loss to Oklahoma in Red River last weekend. While that is something that he showed in bits and pieces in the last two years, he wasn’t really schemed up best to use that part of his game.

In each of the last two years, the Longhorns really tried Foster in four or five different positions. They haven’t really let him get settled in anywhere yet. He’s still registered more than 100 total tackles in his three years playing at Texas thus far, along with 14.0 tackles for loss, five sacks, two interceptions, seven pass deflections, and two forced fumbles.

Foster is one of the lowest graded Longhorns defensive players in tackling and pass rushing so far this season. His coverage grades have also dropped since last season. The scheme changes from former defensive coordinator Todd Orlando to newly hired DC/safeties coach Chris Ash might have something to do with that.
