The 2022 Texas football recruiting class could have a target in store in 4-Star DE Omari Abor that is among the gems of this cycle.

There is a ton of potential as to what fourth-year head coach Tom Herman could do with the 2022 Texas football recruiting class in the near future. With the 2022 class already holding a commitment from the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers (also the nation’s top ranked 2022 high school prospect), there is a lot of promise for how Herman and his staff can build out the rest of the group.

One of the key targets of the Longhorns 2022 recruiting class on the defensive side of the ball is the talented four-star Duncanville strong-side defensive end Omari Abor. As one of the emerging elite defensive linemen for the 2022 recruiting cycle, Abor is obviously getting attention from a ton of the nation’s best blue blood programs.

There’s nearly two dozen schools on Abor’s growing offer sheet. The highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes (outside of Texas) the Oklahoma Sooners, Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Baylor Bears, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Oklahoma State Cowboys, SMU Mustangs, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas A&M Aggies, USC Trojans, and Washington Huskies.

And Abor ranks as the nation’s No. 93 2022 high school prospect, No. 5 strong-side defensive end, and the No. 17 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 19 high school prospect, No. 2 strong-side defensive end, and No. 4 prospect out of Texas.

Since there is a sizable difference between the 247Sports Composite and the Top247 ranking for Abor, there is clearly a difference of opinion from the different outlets and ranking services regarding his status at the moment. And this is why 247Sports mentioned Abor as a key part of the top prospects in the 2022 cycle that they think is underrated from the recruiting ranking industry as a whole.

Here’s more on what this 247Sports had to say about Abor in this regard.

"Here is the scouting report from Midlands Region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks: “Big-framed defensive lineman with current build of a four-man end but frame potential to play odd-front role. Could also grow into an interior defender in an even front. Has played with a hand on the ground and standing on the edge. Three-sport participation in football, basketball, and track and field during high school career. Closes fast when pursuing downhill. Flashes encouraging pass-rushing instinct. Faces terrific competition in practices and games. Can improve pad level and leverage consistency. Plays a bit stiff at times and can improve lateral fluidity. Potentially role- and scheme-versatile defensive lineman among the top 2022 prospects in Texas. Projects to high-major level with all-conference potential and long-term NFL Draft ceiling.”"

Still somewhat early in the 2022 recruiting cycle, it appears that Abor is getting his decision potentially down to the Red River rivals, Texas and Oklahoma. There might still be some wiggle room for other programs hot on his trail to work their way among his finalist schools, but Texas and Oklahoma appear to hold the edge as of now.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 5 in the nation and sit in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. They hold three commits in their 2022 class as of the morning of Oct. 22.

The lone defensive commit in the Longhorns 2022 class came from four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. The other two commits in their 2022 class at the moment are the aforementioned Ewers and four-star Lancaster wide receiver Phaizon Wilson.
