Former Texas football QB Shane Buechele getting ESPN Heisman attention
Former Texas football quarterback Shane Buechele is having a career season during the 2020 campaign with the SMU Mustangs.
Very few people would be able to guess that if you compared current Texas football senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger with former starting quarterback (now with the SMU Mustangs) and redshirt senior Shane Buechele in terms of the Heisman race that the latter of the two would be ahead at this point of the season. Ehlinger is putting together a pretty solid season statistically for himself so far, as is Buechele.
But Buechele is actually the one of the two quarterbacks that is helping his team find a lot more success in the win column so far this season. So far this season, SMU registered a record of 5-0 (2-0 AAC). And Buechele himself has registered a solid stat line that pushed the Mustangs to the heights of one of the favorites to win the American Athletic Conference this year.
Buechele registered 1,710 passing yards, 12 passing touchdowns, two interceptions, 10.6 adjusted yards per passing attempt, 67.6 completion percentage, and a career-best 169.5 passer efficiency rating. He’s also added just shy of 40 rushing yards and one rushing score this season.
Leading the AAC in passer efficiency rating, and ranking second in the entire FBS in passing yards so far this season, Buechele is putting together a truly special run in 2020. With that in mind, he’s deservedly receiving some level of attention now from ESPN’s weekly Heisman Watch. Buechele received a vote in this week’s Heisman Watch, to at least slot himself among the top 12 players in the race from ESPN.
The others, along with Buechele, that ranked outside of the top seven but did receive votes in the Heisman Watch were Alabama wide receivers Jaylen Waddle and DeVonta Smith, and Florida tight end Kyle Pitts.
Next up for Buechele and the Mustangs is a premier showdown with the top 10 ranked Cincinnati Bearcats for their Homecoming Game on Oct. 24. Meanwhile, Ehlinger and the Longhorns are set to take on the Baylor Bears at home on Oct. 24 out of their bye week.
