3) Problematic Bears for Texas football: Terrel Bernard

The most productive and proven player, by a good margin, for this Baylor defense heading into the Texas game is a former commit of Herman’s (when he was the head coach of the Houston Cougars), and junior standout linebacker Terrel Bernard. As the do everything linebacker for this Baylor defense, Bernard usually makes life very difficult for opposing skill position players.

I did an entire piece earlier in the week on by Bernard could continue to be a huge problem for the Longhorns. He was able to cause complete destruction in the Texas backfield last year, and is a large reason why star senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger is still seeking out his first career touchdown against Baylor. He doesn’t have any less than four total touchdowns against any other team from the Big 12 in his career to date.

In his career against the Longhorns, Bernard racked up 13.0 total tackles, one tackle for loss, one sack, and one interception (in two starts). Last season in the matchup against Texas alone, Bernard registered eight total tackles (five solo), one tackle for loss, and one sack. He also had multiple quarterback hurries in Baylor’s two touchdown win over Texas last year.

On the season so far, Bernard registered a team-leading 21.0 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, one interception, and one pass breakup. Bernard is their highest graded defensive player that has been on the field for more than 40 snaps this year. He’s also made very little mistakes so far, with just one penalty against in the last 10 games played, no touchdowns allowed, and just two missed tackles on nearly two dozen tries.
