Texas Football: 3 problematic Baylor players for the Longhorns
2) Problematic Bears for Texas football: Charlie Brewer
The clear cut leader on the other side of the ball for this Baylor team is the versatile 6-foot-1 and 210 pound senior dual-threat quarterback Charlie Brewer. Although a shoulder injury has apparently limited Brewer in practice since Baylor resumed football activities this week, he should be ready to go for Texas this weekend.
There’s plenty of controversy in the Baylor camp right now (according to a Bears Illustrated report) regarding Brewer’s overall health and ability to deliver throws all over the field. But Brewer still was able to gash the Texas defense with his legs in the past, and new defensive coordinator Chris Ash should be preparing his group as such.
If Brewer can’t got against the Longhorns, or re-injures himself this weekend, then the reigns would be turned over to backup quarterback Gerry Bohanon.
However, in last year’s win for Baylor over the Longhorns Brewer registered just shy of 300 total yards, one passing touchdown, one rushing touchdown, and no interceptions. He didn’t make that many mistakes and took care of the football to let their defense do their thing and seal the win. Brewer just let his counterpart Ehlinger make more mistakes than he did last year.
So far this season, Brewer registered a 62.3 completion percentage, 371 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 128.5 passer efficiency rating. He also added less than 15 rushing yards and no rushing touchdowns (which is very unusual for Brewer).
Maybe Baylor will get the version of Brewer that’s closer to what they saw from his last year. As a junior, Brewer registered more than 3,500 total yards, 21 passing touchdowns, seven interceptions, 11 rushing touchdowns, and a career-best 147.0 passer efficiency rating.
