Another occurrence surrounding “The Eyes of Texas” alma mater controversy at a Texas football game this weekend happened with a flyover banner.

There is plenty of controversy that arose from the situation with “The Eyes of Texas” alma mater song with the Texas football program this year. From athletic director Chris del Conte stating that he expects the team to stay out on the field for the playing of The Eyes of Texas, to the band not playing live this weekend against the Baylor Bears at home, the headlines surrounding the alma mater just won’t go away.

Texas made headlines back on Oct. 10, in their disheartening four overtime loss at the hands of head coach Lincoln Riley and the Oklahoma Sooners in the annual Red River Rivalry game, when senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger stayed out on the field for the playing of the alma mater. There wasn’t a whole lot of participating in The Eyes of Texas since the start of the 2020 season.

The University of Texas-Austin school president Jay Hartzell also came out this week noting that the band wasn’t expected to play The Eyes of Texas live against Baylor this weekend. But he also noted that he still expected the players to stand for the playing of the alma mater at games for the rest of the season.

And there was even more added to this discussion surrounding the Texas alma mater in the Baylor game this afternoon when there was a plane that flew over Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium with a banner that read “standwithsam.org”. This likely stems from the participation of Ehlinger in the playing of The Eyes of Texas in the Red River loss to Oklahoma two weeks back.

Texas kicked off against Baylor at 2:30 p.m. CT on Oct. 24 at home on the Forty Acres. They came in with a record of 2-2 (1-2 Big 12) after the loss to Oklahoma back on Oct. 10 by the final score of 53-45 in those four overtimes.

Meanwhile, Baylor came into this game with a record of 1-1 (1-1 Big 12) after having their Oct. 17 originally scheduled contest with the Oklahoma State Cowboys pushed to Dec. 12 in the wake of a number of novel coronavirus cases to players and staffers last week. Baylor last played on Oct. 3, in a road loss in Morgantown to the West Virginia Mountaineers in overtime.
