Elite 5-Star 2022 WR Caleb Burton picks Ohio St over Texas football
The 2022 Texas football recruiting class, as expected in recent weeks, lost out on a big commitment from 5-Star WR Caleb Burton to Ohio State.
The news that was expected within the last couple of weeks arrived for second-year head coach Ryan Day and the Ohio State Buckeyes 2022 recruiting class on Nov. 23. A former target of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class, the elite five-star Del Valle wide receiver Caleb Burton, gave his commitment to Ohio State over offers from nearly 40 other schools to start the week off right for Day.
At one point, it looked like the Longhorns and fourth-year head coach Tom Herman were the favorites to land the commitment of Burton. But the ultra-talented 6-foot and 165 pound wideout hailing out of Del Valle, TX, took his talents to join another former Texas commit with the Buckeyes in Columbus. At least that’s where their commitments stand now.
Burton took his talents to join the former Texas commit and the elite five-star Southlake Carroll pro-style quarterback Quinn Ewers with the Buckeyes 2022 recruiting class. Ohio State is now really looking to build an elite 2022 class. They have a solid foundation to build from now.
The commitment of Burton to the Buckeyes was announced on his Twitter timeline on the evening of Nov. 23. He wound up picking Ohio State over offers from a ton of blue blood football programs, including the Longhorns.
The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet included the Alabama Crimson Tide, Auburn Tigers, Clemson Tigers, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, Penn State Nittany Lions, Stanford Cardinal, Texas A&M Aggies, and USC Trojans.
He really had a loaded offer sheet.
What Texas missed on with Burton committing to Ohio State is the nation’s No. 15 2022 high school prospect, No. 2 wide receiver, and No. 4 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 9 high school prospect, No. 1 wide receiver, and No. 2 prospect out of Texas.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Ohio State recruiting class still holds the top spot in the nation, and thus in the Big Ten too. Ohio State is now up to nine commits in their 2022 class, three of which are five-star prospects. And two of those three five-star prospects are prime Texas targets on the trail in Ewers and Burton.
Meanwhile, the lone commit remaining at this point in the 2022 Texas recruiting class is four-star Memorial cornerback Jaylon Guilbeau. With that in mind, the Longhorns hold the No. 26 slot in the national class rankings and sit in the fourth spot in the Big 12.
