Texas Football: 3 reasons why Iowa St could get dominated by the Horns
3) Why Texas football dominates Iowa State
Ehlinger and Herman’s past success against the Clones
Although Iowa State was a really good team in the Big 12 since Herman first arrived on the Forty Acres entering the 2017 season, he’s mostly found a good amount of success in three tries in this series. Despite a tough loss in Ames last season when Texas was slipping down the stretch, Herman has his team ready to go most of the time against Iowa State.
Ehlinger is also good in his career in two starts against Iowa State. The other start for the Longhorns against Iowa State under Herman’s direction went to Shane Buechele back in 2017. Texas got that win by a double-digit margin over Iowa State even when Buechele was the starting quarterback on the road in Ames.
In Ehlinger’s career against Iowa State, he’s registered more than 450 total yards, five total touchdowns (four passing and one rushing), no interceptions, and roughly a 62.0 completion percentage. While that is about on par for Ehlinger for his career numbers against a Big 12 opponent, it is solid considering how good the Iowa State defense was in the last few years.
Ehlinger will have to be stout again for this Longhorns offense since he’ll be facing a very good Iowa State defense. Iowa State’s defense comes into this game allowing just over 23 points per game (good for top 30 in the FBS). And they’re also allowing less than 230 passing yards per game, and 1.5 passing touchdowns. This will not be easy for Ehlinger, but he’s found success against this stout Iowa State defense in the past.
