Texas Football: Herman thinks Ehlinger is a ‘top 2 or 3’ QB in program history
Texas football head coach Tom Herman looks like he will pretty much always hold senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger in a high regard.
There’s going to be a lot of emotions associated with the morning kick off that the Texas football program has on Black Friday at home against the No. 13 ranked Iowa State Cyclones. No. 17 ranked Texas gets Iowa State in their regular season home finale to try and make some headway in their quest to earn a spot in the Big 12 Championship Game come Dec. 19.
Fourth-year Texas head coach Tom Herman talked on a lot of the looming storylines for the home finale against Iowa State this week. And one of the more important talking points for him seemed to be the importance of senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger to this program as a whole.
It is never easy for a head coach to give his take in a weekly press conference on a situation like the one he’s been through with Ehlinger. Herman has essentially solely relied on Ehlinger as his quarterback since he first arrived on the Forty Acres entering the 2017 season. The only other quarterback that started in multiple games for the Longhorns since Herman arrived here as head coach was the current SMU Mustangs senior standout signal caller Shane Buechele.
Herman also mentioned in his weekly press conference (back on Nov. 23) that he feels that Ehlinger will go down as one of the “two or three best quarterbacks” to ever play for this program. That is a high mark considering all of the talented quarterbacks that rolled through the Forty Acres in this nearly 120-year long program history.
In his career to date in four years playing for Texas, Ehlinger registered 10,704 passing yards, 90 passing touchdowns, 27 interceptions, 1,849 rushing yards, and 32 rushing touchdowns. Those numbers are certainly very impressive.
The public court of opinion is still undecided on Ehlinger, at least until we figure out the final result for the Longhorns this season. Finish out his college career on the Forty Acres by winning out this regular season and getting a Big 12 Championship, and Ehlinger will be regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in program history. If Texas achieves mixed results again to finish out this season, then there will continue to be mixed feelings about Ehlinger.
Herman and the Longhorns are set to kick off against Iowa State specifically on Nov. 27 at 11 a.m. CT. Texas comes into this game with a record of 5-2 (4-2 Big 12). Meanwhile, Iowa State comes in with a record of 6-2 (6-1 Big 12).
