Who can defensive coordinator Chris Ash count on for this Texas football secondary for the rest of the season in the wake of Caden Sterns opting out?

Bad news arrived for the Texas football program, by losing two of their top players on each side of the ball for the rest of the season due to opting out to prepare for the 2021 NFL Draft. The first loss that surfaced for fourth-year head coach Tom Herman this week was the standout redshirt junior offensive tackle Sam Cosmi.

And then later in the week, the Longhorns lost former five-star recruit and junior safety Caden Sterns, since he opted out to prepare for the NFL Draft. It was specifically on Nov. 30 that the Longhorns saw the news surface on social media that Sterns would be opting out of the rest of the 2020 college football season.

What remains for the Longhorns after Cosmi and Sterns opted out of the rest of the season are the Kansas schools, and then whatever lies ahead for them in bowl season. Next up for the Longhorns specifically is a road trip to face head coach Chris Klieman and the Kansas State Wildcats on Dec. 5, with kick off at 11 a.m. CT, in Manhattan.

Texas now holds a record of 5-3 (4-3 Big 12), after their disappointing Black Friday/Senior Day loss, by the final score of 23-20, at the hands of the Iowa State Cyclones. Things got even worse for the Longhorns in the week following, since Cosmi and Sterns opted out of the rest of the season.

What Texas is losing in Sterns is a 6-foot-1 and 210 pound safety that registered 52 combined tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, one interception, and three pass breakups. For his career on the Forty Acres in total, Sterns registered 173 combined tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, five interceptions, and eight pass breakups.

Texas is losing a lot in Sterns. They’ll have to find a new glue guy in the secondary from here on out. Here’s a look into three players that must step up for Texas in the wake of Sterns opting out for the rest of the 2020 season.
