Texas Football: Urban Meyer could’ve made a ‘list of demands’ for HC job
If a “list of demands” was made by Urban Meyer for the Texas football head coaching job, that would at least be some traction for the news cycle.
It’s not the greatest time to be fourth-year Texas football head coach Tom Herman right now. All of the conversations going on around his program and the fan base (also the entirety of the media landscape) seems to be surrounding his hot seat and the potential of Texas athletic director Chris del Conte and this administration hiring Urban Meyer.
The former Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida Gators three-time National Championship-winning head coach Meyer is the talk of the town right now around the Forty Acres. If the Longhorns could hire Meyer, that would be great. But there’s a lengthy list of hurdles that Texas will have to get through before they could reach that point.
The first major hurdle is Meyer being confident that he’s back at a point where he’s healthy enough to return to the college football coaching ranks. That seemed to be a big issue that pushed him into retirement a couple of years ago when he stepped down as the Ohio State head coach. He had then passed the reigns onto former Ohio State offensive coordinator Ryan Day.
That turned out pretty well for the Buckeyes, all things considered.
Regardless of how it gets done, a lot of Longhorns fans very much want the Meyer hire to happen. But we’ve seen this type of situation play out before where Texas wanted to go for the home run hire, and they get someone that was halfway down their wish list in the end.
All of the chatter going on around Herman and Meyer right now largely distracts from the finish to this regular season. But the loss last week to the Iowa State Cyclones on Senior Day took a lot of interest away from the finish to the season, and turned it to a potential coaching search.
That’s where we land now, with all of the rumors surrounding the status of the Meyer pursuit. In a recent piece from Horns247 (paid content), there were apparently multiple sources digging into what Meyer is looking into right now. One of the most intriguing parts of that piece was the fact that Meyer might’ve made a “list of demands” for what he wants if he was to be the Longhorns next head coach.
If that is the case where Meyer actually made demands for what he wants as the Longhorns head coach, that is great news for the fan base. But a lot of these rumors appear to be nothing more than conjecture. While some might have happened, we don’t have concrete evidence as to where Meyer’s intentions lie at the moment.
Texas takes a record of 5-3 (4-3 Big 12) into their matchup this weekend with the Kansas State Wildcats and head coach Chris Klieman. Another loss this season seems like it could be the last straw for Herman.
