4) Texas football HC candidates after Meyer

Joe Brady, Carolina Panthers OC

I’ve mentioned the potential candidacy of the former LSU Tigers offensive coordinator, now on staff with head coach Matt Rhule in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers, Joe Brady as a decent hire for the Longhorns before. Brady has a very fast rising star around both the college and NFL coaching ranks. And it might be good on Texas to scoop him up before someone else does.

It’s hard to argue with the fact that Brady was one of the biggest factors in both former LSU star quarterback Joe Burrow winning the Heisman Trophy last year, and the Tigers winning the National Championship. Brady took his talents to the NFL as an offensive coordinator while his stock was high. And the Panthers are doing pretty well given their lack of depth and experience on that side of the ball.

The Panthers have actually improved their NFL ranking in passing yards, passing touchdowns, rushing yards, rushing yards, and net yards per play, from 2019 to this year after Brady took over the play calling reigns. He clearly had a positive impact along with LSU co-offensive coordinator Steve Ensminger last season too.

At just 31 years old, Brady would surely be a bold and young hire if the Longhorns looked his way for the head coaching role. But Texas has pursued Brady in the past, looking into him as a potential offensive coordinator candidate last offseason, before hiring Mike Yurcich for the role.

All in all, Brady is an interesting idea for the Longhorns that shouldn’t be ruled out if this head coaching job does open up next offseason.
