3) Texas basketball bold predictions in Big 12 play

Courtney Ramey leads the Big 12 in scoring

This is definitely the boldest of the three bold predictions on this list. The Longhorns don’t tend to bolster the most explosive scoring offense in the Big 12 on the hardwood, especially under Smart’s direction. But this season feels a bit different across the board for Smart’s Longhorns, and the scoring from their dynamic guard pairing of junior Courtney Ramey and senior Matt Coleman is part of the reason why.

Averaging nearly 30 points per game combined through six games this season, Ramey and Coleman are starting to fulfill a lot of the potential that a lot of Longhorns fans always knew they had. And each is standing out in their own right, doing multiple things on both ends of the floor to help this Texas team reach new heights.

Through six games played this season (all of which he’s started in), Ramey averaged a team and career-high 14.7 points per game, 3.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.3 blocks. He shot 42.6 percent from the field, 41.7 percent from beyond the arc, and 87.0 percent from the free-throw line.

At the moment, Ramey ranks in the top 10 in scoring among players in the Big 12. That picture of the top scorers in the Big 12 this season (in terms of points per game) is likely going to change once the conference slate takes full effect. But Ramey finished last season hot offensively, and he’s scored in double figures in each of his six games played this season.

The consistency and growth are both there in Ramey’s game so far this season to prove that he can be one of the Big 12’s scoring leaders during the thick of the conference slate.
