3) Must have 2021 Texas football commits before ESP

There’s been a lot of talk of late about which of the Lone Star Showdown rivals will be able to land the commitment of the extremely talented four-star Cy-Fair 5-foot-10 and 205 pound running back LJ Johnson. With Texas looking like they’re officially out of the running to win the commitment of five-star Lakeview Centennial running back Camar Wheaton (who is trending to Oklahoma at the moment).

Texas does already have one running back commit in their 2021 class at the moment, with the unheralded three-star Hallettsville product Jonathon Brooks. And while Brooks surely looks to have a bright future ahead with the Longhorns, they don’t have any blue chip commits at the position in their 2021 class. That’s what Johnson could bring to the table for them if he announces his commitment before, or during, the Early Signing Period.

The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions do have their experts thinking that it’s almost a clean split at this point between Texas and the rival Texas A&M Aggies as to who will land Johnson’s pledge over the rest of the field.

As of the morning of Dec. 15, Johnson holds offers from 40 schools. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet includes the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU Tigers, Oklahoma, Florida Gators, Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ohio State Buckeyes, Tennessee Volunteers, and USC Trojans.

Moreover, Johnson ranks as the nation’s No. 40 2021 high school prospect, No. 3 running back, and No. 8 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 also ranks him as the nation’s No. 40 high school prospect, No. 3 running back, and No. 5 prospect out of Texas.
