3) Destinations for Texas football transfer QB Jackson

SMU

A common landing spot it seems for former Texas quarterbacks off the transfer market is with the SMU Mustangs in Dallas. Back in the early 2010’s, it was the former Texas highly coveted five-star recruit Garrett Gilbert that landed with SMU for the final couple years of his career. And two offseasons ago, it was Shane Buechele that wound up with head coach Sonny Dykes and the Mustangs.

With Buechele declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft following the end of the SMU 2020 season, there is an opening for another transfer quarterback to take hold of the starting job. Buechele was a standout quarterback that helped take this SMU program to new heights over the course of the last two years. It was the perfect landing spot for him, and helped him boost his draft stock in the end.

Jackson did get a scholarship offer coming out of high school from Dykes’ coaching staff. It was not all that long ago that SMU was one of the local schools going after him out of Duncanville High School. The move for a quarterback like Jackson to take his talents closer to home is not uncommon either.

An offense that averaged 38.6 points per game, 318 passing yards, around 2.5 passing touchdowns, and boosted Buechele to new heights, would not be the worst spot for Jackson to land. If Dykes and the Mustangs are looking to hit the transfer portal again for help at the quarterback position, then Jackson should be one of their top targets.
