3) Instant impact 2021 Texas football early signees

One of the stronger hauls in terms of pure talent in the Longhorns 2021 class looks to be at the cornerback position. There were only two position groups that Texas currently holds multiple blue chip commits from at this point. One of those is cornerback, and the other is outside linebacker. And the lone cornerback signee at this point in time is the four-star John Muir product Jamier Johnson.

This California native looks to be a really good fit with the scheme led by first-year defensive coordinator/safeties coach Chris Ash. Johnson is an athletic 6-foot and 170 pound cornerback that has a rather polished skill set. He’s a really good one-on-one cover corner with good field vision and much better than average hands for a DB.

Johnson gave his commitment to Texas over offers from just over a dozen other schools. The other highlighting schools on his offer sheet included the Arizona Wildcats, Arizona State Sun Devils, Florida Gators, Michigan Wolverines, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oregon Ducks, and USC Trojans. A lot of the attention that Johnson received on the recruiting trail came from schools in PAC-12 country since he hails out of Pasadena, CA.

Moreover, Johnson ranks as the nation’s No. 263 2021 high school prospect, No. 20 cornerback, and No. 22 prospect out of California (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the No. 24 cornerback and No. 26 prospect out of California.

With Texas landing Dunn out of the NCAA Transfer Portal on the first day of the Early Signing Period, the need for immediate playing time for Johnson dwindles. But with the off-the-field issues for Ibraheem, Johnson could have more of a chance to compete for a bigger role early on in his college career.
