Texas Basketball: 3 takeaways from huge Big 12 opening win over OK State
1) Takeaways from Texas basketball’s win over OK State
Greg Brown takes over in the best way possible
There were two different MVP’s so far for the Longhorns at different points of this regular season through eight games. The first half of those eight games saw the hypothetical MVP honors go to the versatile standout senior guard Matt Coleman. And the last four games should go to their former five-star recruit and potent power forward Brown.
In the last three games alone, Brown registered 19.7 points per game, 8.7 rebounds, no assists, 0.7 steals, and 2.7 blocks. He’s shot an efficient 49 percent from the field in that span of games, along with an insane 61 percent from beyond the arc, and 69 percent from the free-throw line.
And in this win over Oklahoma State at home on Dec. 20, Brown led the way for the Longhorns again. He registered a team-high 24 points, to go along with a game and season-high 14 rebounds, no assists, no steals, and three blocks. Brown shot 7-of-14 from the field, 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line.
It wasn’t just Brown that was solid in multiple areas of this game for Texas, though. Coleman wasn’t his most efficient in terms of shot selection and overall shooting efficiency. But he did make a big impact in a number of other areas of the game, especially in defending Cunningham one-on-one in transition and on the perimeter.
Coleman registered 15 points, and played in all 40 minutes in this game. He also registered seven rebounds, four assists, two steals, no blocks, and no turnovers. Coleman shot 2-of-11 from the field, 2-of-6 from beyond the arc, and 9-of-10 from the free-throw line.
