3) Christmas gifts for Texas football HC Herman

Getting Sam Ehlinger back for another year

While the most obvious gift on this list for Herman at Christmastime is the most job security possible entering next offseason. But outside of that, Herman has to want the most experienced and talented team back as possible for 2021. If he is to officially come back as head coach of the Longhorns next season, he’ll need all the help he can get.

With that in mind, it would be huge if he could get his senior star quarterback Sam Ehlinger back for a fifth year on the Forty Acres. Ehlinger looked to be in the final year of his collegiate career prior to the rise of the novel coronavirus pandemic. But the NCAA granted everyone playing in the 2020 college football season an extra year of eligibility.

Thus there is the possibility that the Longhorns can get Ehlinger back for one more year as their starting quarterback. There was writing on the wall that there was no way that would happen heading into next year, but Ehlinger actually did state in media availability earlier this week that he hasn’t ruled out the possibility of coming back yet.

Through nine games played this season with the Longhorns, Ehlinger was pretty efficient, especially in managing turnovers. He’s registered a 60.1 completion percentage, 2,406 passing yards, 25 passing touchdowns, five interceptions, and a 149.9 passer efficiency rating. Ehlinger also rushed for 382 yards and eight scores on the ground.

Getting Ehlinger back for one more year would no doubt be huge for Herman and the Longhorns.
