Texas Football: Tom Herman’s lofty buyout will be $24 million
To buyout both now former Texas football head coach Tom Herman and his staff, it will cost the school just shy of $25 million.
News that was really surprising to both the Big 12 landscape and college football world in general arrived for the Texas football program on the morning of Jan. 2. Texas had the news drop that it would be parting ways with its head coach after four years at the helm.
Including the cost of buying out both now former fourth-year Texas Tom Herman, along with the rest of his coaching staff, the school will pay $24 million to buyout this entire group. The cost to reportedly (per 247Sports) buyout Herman will be set at $15 million. And the cost to buy out the rest of his staff will be around $9-9.5 million.
Herman and the Longhorns had a crazy ride during the 2020 season. In the midst of a crazy year during the novel coronavirus pandemic, Herman didn’t do much to inspire confidence in the fact that he could produce consistent and positive results both on the field and on the recruiting trail over the long haul.
Texas finished up the 2020 season with a record of 7-3 (5-3 Big 12), winning four of their last five games. They rounded it all out after dominating the Colorado Buffaloes in the Alamo Bowl back on Dec. 29, by the convincing final score of 55-23.
However, finishing this season on a high note against a few mediocre-to-decent teams definitely wasn’t enough to give Herman a solid level of job security heading into the 2021 offseason. Texas had a lot of question marks that emerged this fall as it pertains to Herman.
It was still anticipated that the Texas administration would wait out at least until the College Football Playoff National Championship Game was in the rear view mirror later this month to get something done like this. At one point, Texas athletic director Chris del Conte even announced that Herman would be back in 2021.
The replacement for Herman will be the current Alabama Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian. The ex-Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator, and USC Trojans and Washington Huskies head coach was likely to get a big coaching job during the 2021 offseason, but this is a large spot for him to wind up in.
Sark will still have to see out the College Football Playoff National Championship Game under head coach Nick Saban with Alabama against the Ohio State Buckeyes. He can then officially turn his attention to this coaching job on the Forty Acres.
Herman wound up finishing out his four year tenure as the Texas head coach with a record of 32-18. He now has a total record as an FBS head coach, between his time with the Longhorns and Houston Cougars, of 54-22.
