There’s very few programs around the country that are as hot on the recruiting trail for their 2022 class than newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian has in store on the Forty Acres of late. The 2022 Texas football recruiting class is putting together a magical run on the trail of late, especially at the skill positions.

Turning the attention to the defensive side of the ball will be key for Sark and new defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski to really start rounding out this 2022 recruiting class. Texas has done most of their good work on the recruiting trail for the 2022 class on the offensive side of the ball, which makes sense given Sark’s coaching background.

A potential next target up for the Longhorns 2022 class on the defensive side of the ball is a prospect that has come and gone from their radar. Texas just re-offered the four-star 6-foot-2 and 210 pound Evanston Township outside linebacker Sebastian Cheeks.

Texas is now one of more than 20 programs that has now sent a scholarship offer to Cheeks. He held one from Texas prior to the departure of now former head coach Tom Herman, though. Herman and former Texas linebackers coach Coleman Hutzler were previously pursuing Cheeks pretty hard.

Now it is likely to be Kwiatkowski and new linebackers coach Jeff Choate that are pursuing Cheeks.

The Texas football re-offer

Of the other schools on his offer sheet, ones to note includes the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Wisconsin Badgers, Iowa Hawkeyes, Michigan Wolverines, Ole Miss Rebels, Oregon Ducks, Stanford Cardinal, and Indiana Hoosiers.

It does appear that the front runner to land the commitment of Cheeks at this point in time is head coach Brian Kelly and the Fighting Irish. The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions have all expert pickings going the way of Notre Dame over the rest of the competition.

This talented Illinois native could be the second linebacker commit in the mix for the Longhorns 2022 class, but he would be the first blue chip with this position group. Texas also has a commitment from underrated three-star Arlington-Martin inside linebacker Trevell Johnson.

Moreover, Cheeks ranks as the nation’s No. 154 2022 high school prospect, No. 14 outside linebacker, and No. 3 prospect out of Illinois (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 142 high school prospect, No. 12 outside linebacker, and No. 3 prospect out of Illinois.

According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 7 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas now has six commits in their 2022 class, with the latest coming from the elite four-star Frisco-Liberty wide receiver Evan Stewart.
