Texas Baseball: Longhorns have a chance for dominant sweep of Baylor
In the midst of a tough weekend for fans on the Forty Acres as a whole, thanks to the performance of the men’s hoops team on the night of March 20, there’s a chance for some positive energy thanks to the Texas baseball program. More confidence can be restored on the Forty Acres among Texas fans (following the tough March 20 NCAA Tournament loss against the Abilene Christian Wildcats) if the baseball team can down the Baylor Bears to cap a three-game series this weekend.
On the afternoon of March 21, the Longhorns will take to the in Waco, TX, to try and down the Bears for the third game in a row. Texas has also eight games in a row heading into this last meeting of the series this weekend with Baylor.
Texas opened up their Big 12 slate back on March 19 against the Bears. And they’ve won the last two games by a margin of two and one runs, respectively. In their last outing with Baylor, Texas rode a two-run sixth inning to nab the win by the final score of 4-3.

And on March 21, the Longhorns will look to get a solid outing out of redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Kolby Kubichek, who is the starter against Baylor. The Bears give the mound to right-hander Hayden Kettler in this game.
Kubichek comes into this game with a record of 2-1 and an earned run average of 2.50. He’s one of the best in the Big 12 so far this season, with 25 strikeouts in total (12.50 strikeouts per nine innings).
Kettler will be a tough matchup, though as he comes into this game with a record of 1-0 and a 1.54 ERA.
Two Longhorns batters to watch in this game will be redshirt junior infielders Zach Zubia and Cam Williams. The first baseman Zubia has led the way for Texas of late in the field and with his bat. He’s registered a team-high 19 runs batted in, .293 batting average, .852 OPS, one home run, 11 runs, and a team-high 140 putouts.
Meanwhile, Williams leads the team with four home runs and a stellar .946 OPS, along with a .279 batting average, 14 RBI, 19 hits, and eight runs. He’s the power bat in the lineup for the Longhorns so far this season.
Texas carries a record of 14-5 (2-0 Big 12) into this Sunday afternoon meeting with the Bears. Meanwhile, Baylor now sports a record of 12-6 (0-2) following their last two losses to the Longhorns earlier in the weekend.
Texas got off to a slow start on the diamond this season, but is scorching hot of late. They have really turned it around in the midst of this winning streak that can get stretched to nine games if they beat Baylor to round out the weekend. After the final meeting in this series with Baylor, the Longhorns will host Incarnate Word in a one-game series at home at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on March 23.
