Texas Football: Elite 5-Star CB Denver Harris trending to Longhorns
Just one day ahead of the start of spring ball for newly hired head coach Steve Sarkisian, things on and off-the-field for this program are starting to heat up. Sark does have an important stretch for the next month or so throughout spring ball that he’ll have to continue to elevate the 2022 Texas football recruiting class.
As far as what Longhorns fans will be watching on the recruiting trail for the 2022 class are concerned, the status of the pursuit of the elite five-star North Shore cornerback Denver Harris will be a constant. The ultra highly coveted 6-foot-1 and 180 pound Houston-area product could be a staple of the Longhorns 2022 class if Sark and new defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski were able to get a commitment out of him.
And the good news in this regard for the Longhorns is that it looks like they are at the forefront of the recruitment of Harris at this point in time. Yet another expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Prediction that was put in this week went in favor of Texas over the 37 other schools that have offered Harris thus far.
There are now two expert Crystal Ball Predictions in that favor Harris to give his commitment to Texas over the rest of the field. And the Rivals FutureCast has their analysts and publishers split on the commitment of Harris going between the Longhorns and LSU Tigers.
The fight ahead for Texas football for 5-Star CB Denver Harris
Texas is one of 38 schools that have offered Harris in total as of the afternoon of March 22. Some of the other notable schools on his offer sheet include the Alabama Crimson Tide, LSU, Texas A&M Aggies, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, Georgia Bulldogs, Michigan Wolverines, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Ohio State Buckeyes, Oklahoma Sooners, Oregon Ducks, Tennessee Volunteers, and USC Trojans.
The scholarship offer that Texas sent out to Harris came back on Aug. 30, 2019, so they’ve been after him for a good while now.
Texas was one of the early schools to offer Harris, which should give them a leg up on the trail from here on out. It does look like Sark and the Longhorns will run into some stiff competition with the likes of Alabama, LSU, and Texas A&M, all heavily prioritizing his pursuit. Former Texas cornerbacks coach Jay Valai is now part of the Alabama staff (in the same role), and he’s one of the main recruiters pursuing Harris.
There might be at least a few months before the decision of Harris is officially announced. Keeping on him as much as possible will be key from here on out for Sark and his new Texas coaching staff.
Moreover, Harris ranks as the nation’s No. 6 2022 high school prospect, No. 3 cornerback, and the No. 2 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 20 high school prospect, No. 3 cornerback, and No. 5 prospect out of Texas.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 8 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind Oklahoma. Texas now holds commits from six prospects in their 2022 class, with the elite five-star Junipero Serra pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy as the highest-rated.
