Texas Basketball: 2 ex-Marquette players to target in the transfer portal
Ex-Marquette transfer portal targets No. 1: Jamal Cain
Since the Longhorns are also about to undergo a plethora of losses in their frontcourt rotation entering the offseason, the next former Golden Eagles player on this list should be a prime target out of the transfer portal for whoever the next head coach is in Austin. The now former Marquette 6-foot-7 and 200 pound senior forward Jamal Cain is a great potential target for Texas this offseason.
Cain really rose to the occasion, assuming a bigger role for the Golden Eagles, during his senior campaign last season. For the first time in his college career to date, Cain started in more than three games in a single season. And that amounted to him starting in all but one of the 27 games he played in during the 2020-21 campaign.
Capable of filling a role for the Longhorns either coming off the bench or in the starting five, Cain could be a versatile fit on the Forty Acres. Cain is a good defender, athletic two-way wing or power forward, and increasingly improving iso player when needed. He was also one of the best stretch forwards that the Golden Eagles had in the mix for the last few seasons.
Cain is a career 38 percent shooter from beyond the arc and 46 percent shooter from the field. Considering Texas could use more help among their outside shooters in the forward/frontcourt rotation, Cain should be a highly sought-after transfer target for them. Few potential transfer targets for Texas this offseason could also make the immediate impact and be as good of a fit with the program as the former Golden Eagle Cain.
