Competition is running hot on the trail right now for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and his 2022 Texas football recruiting class. Texas hit a hot streak on the recruiting trail for both their 2022 and 2023 classes in the first two months or so after Sark was hired as the next head coach of this program. But a lag in results in the last month and a half has stalled that momentum on the recruiting trail.

Sark and the Longhorns need to continue to build the momentum this offseason by prioritizing the correct prospects to fill out their 2022 class, and get ready for official visit season to come back this summer. Official visits are now confirmed to officially resume in June, which could be huge for Sark and this new coaching staff.

Forming those in-person relationships could be huge since this is a new Texas coaching staff that hasn’t really had much in-person contact outside of this program. And one key prospect that it looks like Texas is starting to gain a lot of ground with of late, that could be key come the resumption of official visits this summer, is the talented four-star 5-foot-10 and 165 pound Spearman athlete Brenen Thompson.

Increased pursuit of Brenen Thompson for Texas football recruiting

Texas still has a lot of catch-up to do in pursuit of the in-state product Thompson’s commitment. The 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions do have all four experts picking the pledge of Thompson to go to the Clemson Tigers and head coach Dabo Swinney over the rest of the competition.

And the Rivals FutureCast has their analysts and publishers at a clean split between predicting the commitment of Thompson to land with either Clemson or the rival Oklahoma Sooners.

However, it does appear that the Longhorns very much still stand in the race to get Thompson’s pledge when it’s all said and done. According to a report from Horns247 on April 15 (paid content), Texas is “making up ground” in the race to land Thompson.

Texas is one of a number of front runners in the race to land Thompson. Texas, Clemson, and Oklahoma are three of three dozen schools on the lengthy offer sheet of the Spearman, TX, native.

Some of the other notable schools on Thompson’s offer sheet include the Oklahoma State Cowboys, Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas A&M Aggies, Auburn Tigers, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Oregon Ducks, Tennessee Volunteers, USC Trojans, and Stanford Cardinal.

Moreover, Thompson ranks as the nation’s No. 86 2022 high school prospect, No. 8 athlete, and No. 16 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 166 high school prospect, No. 12 athlete, and No. 27 prospect out of Texas.
