Texas Football: Predicting next transfer addition after Devin Richardson
Derion Kendrick, CB
About the best that the Longhorns and newly hired former Notre Dame Fighting Irish defensive backs coach Terry Joseph could do in the transfer portal to upgrade at the cornerback position this offseason is with the former Clemson Tiger Derion Kendrick. The elite former five-star recruit and 6-foot and 190 pound junior Rock Hill, SC, native Kendrick remain one of the most high-profile names in the transfer portal at this point in time.
Kendrick has experience playing on both sides of the ball during his three years with head coach Dabo Swinney and Clemson. But his most common position on either side of the ball was cornerback over the course of the last three seasons.
Since Texas has largely solidified themselves at the linebacker position out of the portal this offseason (as least as it stands now), the attention should now turn to the defensive backfield. If there is one area that the Longhorns could still round out on either side of the ball out of the portal for the remainder of the offseason, it would be at defensive back.
Kendrick was on the Longhorns’ radar for a good while now. But there are no current indicators as to which particular schools he’s leaning toward right now.
In his three years playing for Clemson, Kendrick registered 63 combined tackles, four tackles for loss, one sack, three interceptions (one of which was returned for a touchdown), a whopping 11 pass breakups, one forced fumble, and two fumble recoveries (also one of which was taken for a touchdown).
Meanwhile, Kendrick could still be a threat for the Longhorns if they want to use him on the offensive side of the ball. He has roughly 250 yards from scrimmage playing at the skill positions on offense from his time at Clemson.
