Jacksonville Jaguars

Among the busier NFL teams on day one of the draft was the Jacksonville Jaguars out of the AFC South. As they look to bounce back from a disappointing 2020 campaign, the Jaguars are breaking in a new-look team on both sides of the ball. They’re also breaking in a new coaching staff under the direction of the former Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer.

What would be really interesting about Sterns landing with the Jaguars is the fit with the new coaching staff and the building talent in Jacksonville. It’s hard to not be excited about what the Jags have brewing in their backfield between the first overall pick and former Clemson star quarterback Trevor Lawrence, his former Tigers teammate, and running back Travis Etienne, and second-year star rusher James Robinson.

On the defensive side of the ball, Sterns would likely be able to compete right away with the likes of Josh Jones and Rudy Ford for backup reps at the safety position. Rayshawn Jenkins and Jarrod Wilson are the current projected starters for the Jags at the two safety spots this year. But it likely wouldn’t take much for Sterns to overtake one of the two if he showed flashes of promise as a rookie.

Landing with the Jags would also mean that Sterns gets to play for the same defensive coordinator/safeties coach he was improving under with the Longhorns last season. Former Texas defensive coordinator and Rutgers Scarlet Knights head coach Chris Ash is now on staff with Meyer and the Jags.

Jacksonville had the 27th ranked pass defense in the NFL last season, thus it would make a lot of sense for them to get help in the secondary by targeting Sterns in the draft.
