San Francisco 49ers

A team that looks to very much be at least in a partial rebuilding mode through this draft is the San Francisco 49ers. Former Longhorn and head coach Kyle Shanahan had a very injured team that didn’t live up to the post-Super Bowl billing last season. The 49ers were an upstart power that won the NFC two years ago.

But last season, Shanahan and the Niners weren’t even able to crack the playoffs. The NFC West was one of the NFL’s deeper divisions last season, which clearly didn’t play to the benefit of the Niners.

Yet, a new direction is coming for the Niners starting at the quarterback position. With their first-round draft pick, the Niners picked up former North Dakota State Bison star quarterback Trey Lance. At the outset of this coming season, it could be Lance that backs up Jimmy Garoppolo. But that might change in the blink of an eye.

Elsewhere, the Niners still need some depth help in the secondary, specifically at the safety position. Sterns could help them out immediately, and his long-term potential should be thrilling to their scouting department. A pass defense that ranked fourth in the NFL last season could also get better with Sterns in the mix.

The combination of the Niners addressing a key positional need on the defensive side of the ball, and Sterns landing in a good situation right away could benefit all parties involved. Landing with the Niners on day two or three of this year’s draft could be great for Sterns.
