A free agent signing that took the NFL by storm this week saw the former Florida Gators’ star quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow get picked up by the Jacksonville Jaguars. Tebow will now get to be reunited with his former head coach at Florida Urban Meyer with the Jags. As one of the most interesting moves of the NFL offseason thus far, a former big-name Texas football quarterback pitched his opinion on the matter.

Former Longhorns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms didn’t have the most positive outlook on the Jags signing Tebow to reunite him with Meyer this year. In a post on his Twitter timeline on May 11, Simms gave a very frank take on the matter of the Jags signing Tebow, giving a grim outlook as a result for that team.

He stated in his post on his Twitter timeline on the morning of May 11 that he thinks the Jags are taking an unnecessary risk and that Tebow “clearly doesn’t deserve the shot he’s getting”. Simms ripped even further into Tebow by stating that he does wonder what “teammates will think when a lesser player is taking up practice reps as a marketing ploy”.

Former Texas football QB Chris Simms not a fan of the Tim Tebow signing

Simms really ripped into the Tebow signing with a more straightforward opinion than you will usually see straight from a media source that is also a former NFL player. This take on the Jags signing Tebow clearly was going to draw mixed reactions and a polarized crowd after Simms posted this week.

For the most part, we’ll just have to wait and see what happens with the Tebow signing. Tebow himself called it quits playing baseball in the minor leagues this year. But it didn’t take him long to find his way back into the NFL again.

The Jags are the first NFL team to sign Tebow since the Philadelphia Eagles cut him back in 2015. Since the last NFL game he played in (which came back in 2012 with the New York Jets), three teams have now signed Tebow. The other one not mentioned previously in this piece was the New England Patriots.

Tebow was the 25th overall pick in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos. He lasted two years in Denver before getting shipped off, and he did win one playoff game, famously upsetting Ben Roethlisberger and the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Wild Card Round.

Simms was a signal caller for the Longhorns from 1999-2002. He was eventually picked up by the Buccaneers in the third round of the 2003 NFL Draft. He is known for having rather polarized opinions on the NFL, and specifically the draft, as a media personality in recent years.
