One of the early clear targets that Beard and the Longhorns had out of the transfer portal this offseason after he was hired as head coach was the former talented four-star recruit and 6-foot-7 and 215 pound to-be sophomore shooting guard/wing Micah Peavy. This native of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex Peavy was firmly on the Longhorns’ radar during his recruitment.

But it was Beard’s system at Texas Tech that Peavy ultimately bought into when it was all said and done. It did only take Peavy one year, though, before he put his name in the transfer portal after landing with the Red Raiders. This did look like a good opportunity to keep an NBA-caliber player like Peavy in the same system at a different school with Beard.

The freshman campaign wasn’t the best for Peavy last season. He didn’t have the most efficient season but did end it on a high note at least. In 29 games played with the Red Raiders last season, Peavy averaged 5.7 points per game, 3.1 rebounds, 1.4 assists, 0.6 steals, and 0.2 blocks. And he shot 45.9 percent from the field, didn’t hit on any attempts from beyond the arc, and 47.4 percent from the free-throw line.

Although Peavy did pick up and leave Lubbock, he’s not taking his talents too far away from there. In fact, he’s leaving the Texas Tech program to join head coach Jamie Dixon and the Big 12 foe TCU Horned Frogs.

Maybe Texas had a chance to land Peavy, or maybe they got to him too late. Either way, the Longhorns will get to face Peavy multiple times this season in Big 12 play.
