Peyton Powell, ATH

The most recent of the flips to note from Texas to Baylor is the former four-star recruit and Permian athlete Peyton Powell. The Odessa, TX, native came out of high school ranking as the nation’s No. 263 prospect, No. 14 athlete, and No. 33 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite).

A winding road for Powell still early in his college career has taken him from being a one-time Texas commit, to flipping to Baylor, and then transferring to now play in the Big Ten. Two offseasons ago, Powell took his talents from Waco to join the Rutgers Scarlet Knights out of the transfer portal. He had originally signed with Baylor’s 2019 recruiting class during the Early Signing Period in December 2018.

But Powell would later put his name in the transfer portal and land with Rutgers. He wound up signing with Rutgers as part of their 2020 class, still with four years of eligibility remaining. Although Powell has yet to take a single snap for the Scarlet Knights and head coach Greg Schiano, he is a talent worth watching in 2021.

This fall should be the first significant game reps that Powell gets since he should now be settled into the Rutgers system. Where exactly Powell will play is a different question. He was recruited by different teams out of high school to play a few different positions, including quarterback, wide receiver, and defensive back.
