One of the potentially most intriguing point guard targets out of the transfer portal for the Longhorns this year is actually a former member of this program. The now-former Texas and Rutgers Scarlet Knights 6-foot-2 and 185-pound point guard Jacob Young is just one of the more proven at his position in the portal at this point in time.

For the second time in his career, Young put his name in the transfer portal. And the possibility of him landing at the spot he started his college career out in could be an appealing one to the Houston, TX-area product. Young was a highly-touted four-star recruit coming out of high school, and he’s consistently improved his game in the last three seasons.

Young had the most productive season of his college career to date with Rutgers during the 2020-21 campaign. In 28 games played with Rutgers last season, Young averaged a career-best 14.1 points per game, 1.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.7 steals, and no blocks. And he shot 46.9 percent from the field, 36.9 percent from beyond the arc, and 72.6 percent from the free-throw line.

The way that Young played for the Scarlet Knights last season means that the next program he lands with should have confidence in the value he will provide for them right away. Texas doesn’t have one solid option at the point guard position in their starting unit yet, and Young might be a good insurance policy to fill that role.
