Rueben Owens, RB

The lone commit in the 2023 class for Sark and the Longhorns at this point in time is the elite five-star El Campo running back Rueben Owens. The uber-talented and potent 5-foot-11 and 190 pound Texas native Owens kicked off the Longhorns 2023 class in about the best fashion possible. Building the foundation for the 2023 class with a five-star commit at a skill position is huge for Texas.

Moving forward, Texas can use the commitment of Owens to pitch other top targets for their 2023 class. That includes targeting key blue-chip recruits such as five-star quarterback Arch Manning, five-star edge rusher Anthony Hill, and five-star wide receiver Jalen Hale. But that doesn’t mean it will come easy for Texas to fend off competing schools trying to flip Owens in the near future.

There’s still a long time before the first signing period arrives for the 2023 recruiting cycle. And the pure amount of volatility that the Longhorns experienced on the recruiting trail in the past calendar year could be an indication of what’s to come in the next two offseasons. Granted Sark have provided more stability thus far, despite the coaching staff turnover, than former head coach Tom Herman did in his last 18 months in Austin.

It is important to note that Texas is expected to have Owens on campus for a visit this summer, likely coming next month. But in the time since Owens originally committed to Texas, on Feb. 25, two key schools have offered him. Those include the Alabama Crimson Tide and Texas Tech.

Alabama has the former Texas cornerbacks coach Valai and noted running backs coach Robert Gillespie after Owens, which is something to watch moving forward.
