If Texas is to add another cornerback out of the transfer portal this offseason, it seems like the top target at the moment has to be the former Tulsa Golden Hurricane standout senior Akayleb Evans. The lengthy 6-foot-2 and 190 pound Evans looks to be firmly on the Longhorns’ radar, and could certainly help out in the cornerback room.

Texas reportedly made it into the top five finalist schools for Evans out of the transfer portal this week. It is an interesting mix of schools, though, that are in the top five for Evans. The five teams are the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, Mizzou Tigers, Texas Tech Red Raiders, FCS Jackson State, and Texas. There is only one Big 12 foe competing to get a commitment from Evans.

There was already one cornerback addition for the Longhorns out of the transfer portal this offseason in Dunn. A large competition could brew for Texas at the cornerback position for starting roles if they brought in Evans to join a group that already includes Dunn, senior D’Shawn Jamison, redshirt senior Josh Thompson, sophomore Kitan Crawford, etc.

Yet, Texas would be getting a true game-breaker in Evans if he were to land on the Forty Acres. He is good in one-on-one coverage and can hang with most any coverage assignment. During his four years playing for Tulsa, he registered 82 combined tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, 11 pass breakups, and one forced fumble.

It might be a risk to losing other current Longhorns players in the cornerback room if they bring in Evans, but he would surely be an immediate impact commit to get out of the portal.
