The desired result did not get delivered for head coach David Pierce and No. 2 ranked Texas baseball to open up the College World Series over the weekend. Texas faced the No. 7 ranked Mississippi State Bulldogs out of the SEC West to open up their run in Omaha at the College World Series. And that June 20 matchup with Mississippi State wasn’t very eventful for Texas until the ninth inning.

Mississippi State’s pitching staff locked down on the Longhorns lineup from the very start of this game. A solid outing from redshirt sophomore right-hander Ty Madden also went all for naught as the bats fell silent during his time on the mound. Madden gave the Longhorns seven solid innings of work where he allowed just two earned runs on four hits. He also struck out 10 Bulldogs batters on the night.

Despite this good start from Madden, it was the Mississippi State staff that stole the show on Sunday night. Will Bednar tossed six innings of shutout ball in which he struck out a whopping 15 Texas batters. Mississippi State struck out more batters than any staff in the country during the regular season, and it showed against Texas over the weekend.

Mike Antico and Ty Madden can’t get Texas baseball past Mississippi State

Texas only got one hit on the night against Bednar, which put them squarely behind the eight ball following the seventh-inning stretch. There was a bit more life in the Texas bats in the last three innings, but not enough to overcome this two-run deficit. Texas did get one run in the bottom of the ninth inning, but that still fell short of where they needed to be to push the game to extras.

The one run that the Longhorns did get in the bottom of the ninth inning came from Mike Antico. But that was the only hit on the day for Antico, as none of the batters for the Longhorns managed more than one for the entire game.

The final score in this game wound up falling in favor of Mississippi State 2-1. Texas was upset to start the College World Series, and it’s their first loss since the Big 12 Tournament. Now the Longhorns must take care of business in their next College World Series matchup, which comes on June 22 against the No. 3 ranked Tennessee Volunteers.

Tennessee fell short to the No. 6 ranked Virginia Cavaliers in convincing fashion the afternoon of June 20, by the final score of 6-0. With Texas and Tennessee combining for just one run in their first games in Omaha, this one could be another offensive struggle.
