What seems to be the landing spot for every former Longhorn that hits the transfer portal this offseason is with head coach Clay Helton and the USC Trojans out in the PAC-12 South. USC has landed a plethora of former Longhorns transfers this offseason already, including redshirt sophomore wide receiver/tight end Malcolm Epps, junior running back Keaontay Ingram, and freshman safety Xavion Alford.

Getting Smith would allow this USC coaching staff (that features a multitude of former Texas coaches) to continue to round out their skill positions with former Longhorns.

USC is pretty deep at wide receiver at the moment, but this could present a familiar system and landing spot for Smith. It seemed like the Trojans were the second team in line behind the Longhorns to land the commitment of Smith in their 2018 recruiting class.

Knowing that Helton and the Trojans played a big role in Smith’s recruitment, and there’s a number of former Longhorns transfers already with the team, this might be the favorite landing spot right now for Smith out of the portal. That’s not to mention any connection he has with a former Texas signee (at least for a few months) in sophomore wideout Bru McCoy.

USC has the likes of Drake London, McCoy, and Michael Jackson III, as potential starters this year in the receiving corps. But that group could likely find room for a significant role for Smith heading into the 2021 regular season.
