Texas Football: Top 5-Star OL target Devon Campbell visiting unofficially
As the 2022 Texas football recruiting class tries to capitalize on any momentum built from recent visits, this critical month of hosting official and unofficial visitors isn’t quite done yet. Texas and new head coach Steve Sarkisian have one more big weekend of visitors this month before the dead period resumes entering July. And there’s some big names set to make their way to campus this weekend. That list of big visitors now looks to include the elite five-star Bowie offensive lineman Devon Campbell.
This might be the most important visitor that the Longhorns have for this weekend. Sealing the deal with Campbell in the near future would do wonders for Sark, new offensive line coach/offensive coordinator Kyle Flood, and the Longhorns. Texas has long prioritized the recruitment of Campbell, and it could soon come to a head.
According to a report from Horns247 on June 23 (paid content), Campbell is very likely to visit Texas unofficially this weekend if he can get a ride into Austin. The last time that Campbell made a visit to the Forty Acres (or just to Austin in general) was when he took a self-guided trip in the city back in spring.
Texas football needs to hit on this planned unofficial visit with Devon Campbell
The two official visits that Campbell has this month are with the Oklahoma Sooners (June 25) and USC Trojans (June 4). His official visit with Oklahoma would come right before this reported planned unofficial to Austin.
Oklahoma has longtime offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh as the primary recruiter after Campbell. Meanwhile, the Longhorns have their new OL coach/OC Flood after Campbell as the primary recruiter.
The writing is also still on the wall that the Longhorns are the leaders in the recruitment of Campbell. And this is a position that Sark and Flood need to keep heading into the weekend if the unofficial visit with Campbell holds true.
The expert 247Sports Crystal Ball Predictions have four picks in, all projecting the commitment of Campbell to land with Texas over Oklahoma, USC, and the rest of the field. The Rivals FutureCast also has all of their analysts and publishers picking Campbell to give his pledge to Texas.
Texas has yet to land their first commit along the offensive line in the 2022 class. Obviously, Campbell would be a great place to start in this regard. He ranks as the nation’s No. 10 2022 high school prospect, the top overall interior offensive lineman, and the No. 3 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 23 high school prospect, top overall interior offensive lineman, and the No. 6 prospect out of Texas.
According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class ranks at No. 8 in the nation and in the second spot in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners. Texas now has 11 commits in the 2022 class, with the most recent being (among non-special teamers) three-star Liberty athlete Anthony Jones.
