One of the more hotly discussed targets of the 2022 Texas football recruiting class of late is the talented four-star Evanston Township (IL) linebacker Sebastian Cheeks. This 6-foot-3 and 210-pound Illinois native was firmly on Texas’ radar for about the past two months now. At least that is the time that he’s really risen to the forefront for this staff.

Cheeks was on campus in Austin for an official visit that seemed to go well by most accounts back on June 11. He’s also taken official visits with the likes of the Michigan Wolverines (June 20), North Carolina Tar Heels (June 4), and the Oregon Ducks (June 25).

In a recent piece from 247Sports (paid content), Cheeks had a lot to say about some of his top schools at this point of his recruitment. Most notably for Longhorns fans, he mentioned a lot of the different aspects about his communication with Texas, and the specifics of what he likes about the school.

What Texas football likes about 4-Star LB Sebastian Cheeks, and the other way around?

A lot of the way that Cheeks talks about Texas seems like he is holding them in high regard at the moment. But that is also something that is a two-way street between the Texas coaching staff and Cheeks apparently.

In this 247Sports piece, Cheeks mentioned that Texas is “really high” on him at this point of his recruitment. And that makes sense given that he could be one of the staple defensive commits for this 2022 class, especially at the linebacker position.

Texas has put a lot of their chips on the table in the recruitment of Cheeks. They’re giving him a lot of attention on the recruiting trail right now. That is evident with the fact that Texas has new co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate as his top recruiters.

However, there were a lot of good things that Cheeks had to say about all of his top schools. It’s worth noting that the Wisconsin Badgers were also still included among the top schools for Cheeks that he spoke on here.

If Texas were to land a commitment from Cheeks, he would be by far the highest-rated commit thus far in the 2022 class. He ranks as the nation’s No. 126 2022 high school prospect, No. 13 linebacker, and No. 4 prospect out of Illinois (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 153 high school prospect, No. 18 linebacker, and No. 4 prospect out of Illinois.
