There is a good amount of young talent that new defensive line coach Bo Davis and new co-defensive coordinators/linebackers coaches Pete Kwiatkowski and Jeff Choate have to work with in the trenches on the Forty Acres this year. Texas is likely to see redshirt junior defensive tackle and former four-star recruit Keondre Coburn anchoring the defensive line this fall.

But Texas also has the likes of underrated redshirt sophomore defensive tackle T’Vondre Sweat and sophomore Alfred Collins to add depth in the middle of the defensive line this year.

Adding more depth to the mix would start to pay dividends for Texas if injuries continue to take hold for the likes of Coburn and Sweat and the defensive tackle position heading into the 2021 season. Both have experienced a plethora of injuries over the course of the past three years for the Longhorns.

That is why Texas could benefit from pursuing someone like the former blue-chip recruit and sophomore Tennessee Volunteers defensive tackle Greg Emerson. Putting his name in the transfer portal as recently as this week, Emerson could be a very nice get for Texas at this point of the offseason.

He showed flashes in limited snaps with former head coach Jeremy Pruitt and the Vols in the past two seasons. In roughly 450 snaps played between defense and special teams in the past two years, Emerson registered 31 combined tackles, four tackles for loss, two sacks, and two pass breakups.

Texas was not one of the roughly 20 schools that offered Emerson coming out of North Side High School in Jackson, TN, during the 2018 recruiting cycle. But this would be a good opportunity to gauge his interest to see if he could be a legit depth add to the front seven this year.
