A huge bounce back on the trail for new head coach Steve Sarkisian and running backs coach Stan Drayton for the 2022 Texas football recruiting class came to a head on the evening of June 28. Texas landed a commitment from the talented and potent four-star Tyler Legacy (TX) running back Jamarion Miller.

Texas missed out on landing their second running back commit in the 2022 class last week when three-star Newton product DeAnthony Gatson gave his pledge to head coach Clay Helton and the USC Trojans over the Longhorns. But Miller might be a much better addition to the Longhorns 2022 class when it’s all said and done than Gatson.

He’s surely a much higher-rated prospect for the Longhorns to add at the end of this month.

The Tyler, TX, native and 5-foot-10 and 185-pound Miller is also the second running back commit in the Longhorns 2022 class along with the highly touted four-star Klein Cain product Jaydon Blue.

There was a point in time in which the Longhorns looked like the frontrunners to get a commitment from Miller. He seemed to be very enthused about what the Longhorns could offer him at the next level.

And that level of enthusiasm for Miller seemingly returned in connection with Texas during his official visit to Austin over the weekend. It didn’t take long at all for Miller to announce his decision to take his talents to Texas following that official visit.

The commitment of Miller was announced on his Twitter timeline on the evening of June 28, with a raucous reaction from the Longhorn faithful.

Miller also had two other key official visits he took this month before announcing his commitment to Texas. He also took visits this month with the Florida Gators (June 11) and the rival Texas A&M Aggies (June 4).

Texas has Drayton and new special teams coordinator Jeff Banks after Miller as his top recruiters. They were able to seal the deal with him fast. And this helps to restore some of the momentum on the recruiting trail at the running back position for Drayton after losing the lone commitment in the Longhorns 2023 class in the five-star El Campo product Rueben Owens.

Drayton, Banks, and the Longhorns landed the commitment of Miller over offers from more than two-dozen other schools. Some of the other notable schools on his offer sheet were the Alabama Crimson Tide, Texas A&M, Florida, Florida State Seminoles, LSU Tigers, Nebraska Cornhuskers, Baylor Bears, Oklahoma State Cowboys, TCU Horned Frogs, Texas Tech Red Raiders, and USC.

What Texas is getting out of Miller is the nation’s No. 172 2022 high school prospect, No. 14 running back, and No. 31 prospect out of Texas (247Sports Composite). And the Top247 ranks him as the nation’s No. 119 high school prospect, No. 7 running back, and No. 23 prospect out of Texas.

There’s so much to like about the game of Miller. He’s consistently improved his game and physical tools each year with Tyler Legacy High School to date. He’s a big-bodied running back that runs downhill, but still has a good amount of elusiveness and speed that he brings to the table.

He ran a lightning fast 10.71-second 100 meter dash time during his time running track at Tyler Legacy. That just proves that he still has that type of home run speed that is truly dangerous. He does have a lot of tools that make him look like a five-star caliber prospect.

That is clearly a good thing for Texas.

During his three years with Tyler Legacy thus far, Miller registered 3,279 rushing yards on 411 carries (eight yards per carry), 34 rushing touchdowns, and 44 catches for 618 receiving yards, and eight touchdown catches.

The writing was on the wall coming out of the weekend that Texas looked like the emerging favorite to get a commitment from Miller. But it was a bit sudden that he announced this commitment when he did. That is nothing but good news for the Longhorns and their 2022 class, though.

Texas now has commitments from a dozen prospects in their 2022 class, with the four-star Junipero Serra pro-style quarterback Maalik Murphy as the highest-rated. According to the 247Sports Team Composite Rankings, the 2022 Texas recruiting class now ranks at No. 12 in the nation and second in the Big 12 behind the Oklahoma Sooners.
